August 4, 2011 Who Cooks for One?
It seems like an obvious questions, at first glance. Unmarried people, right? But more people eat alone than you might think. Many people also eat alone part of the time. First, the obvious:
- unmarried (single) people from college age to elderly
- widows and widowers
Who else?
- military spouses with deployed partners
- single parents whose kids are with the other parent, friends, relatives, etc.
- married folks living apart, whether because of jobs or other demands
- single parents with an infant
- spouses who have conflicting work schedules, or whose job(s) require travel
- teenagers who have school or extracurricular conflicts with family meal times
- stay-at-home moms (dads) with school age kids
Over 160 million Americans are unmarried. What stories do you have about cooking for yourself?

You missed a “who.” What if you have two or more different tastes among married couples or families, you could each have your own bowl. Right?

So true! Most of us probably know at least one couple with one vegetarian half, or one who loves liver and the other can’t stand it.

It’s usually when I’m making my meals that I most deeply appreciate the privilege of being able to live alone. I remember my mom making meals for us kids for decades. I remember her trying to make sure we had a vegetable dish to go with every meal. So even though I don’t have popcorn for dinner every night, I appreciate that should I want to, I could, without judgment from or concern for anyone but myself. = )

Yes, indeed. My “popcorn” supper is usually apples and peanut butter, but it’s the same vein. Thanks for visiting!

It’s great that you’re encouraging people to cook for themselves. Not only does it improve your cooking skills, but it’s a way of saying, “I’m worth a delicious meal.” (That said, half a bagel with cheese and an apple was my “popcorn” meal.)

I am a stay at home mom and I enjoy cooking for myself during the day. It is the one time that I can focus on what I want and enjoy rather than trying to please my family. It is a real treat to make something special and enjoy it!

Currently I like ratatouille and a poached egg, or garlic, vegetables and parmesan on pasta!

Even when you have a family, there are moments you need to cook for yourself – and those are actually gratifying. Great post and thank you for your lovely comment!
